- 1). Position your bass drums so they are comfortable to play with each foot. Many drummers angle the bass drums slightly to form a partial semi-circle around them.
- 2). Position your hi-hat stand pedal next to the left bass drum pedal (or next to the right bass drum pedal if you’re using a left-handed setup). Many hi-hat stands possess swivel legs so that the legs can be rotated to prevent interfering with the bass drum pedal or other hardware. You want to be able to move freely between the left bass drum and hi-hat pedals.
- 3). Generally, double bass drum playing means alternating your footing, so try different footing combinations.
- 4). Practice moving from the left bass drum pedal to the hi-hat stand. Get comfortable switching.
- 5). For sound adjustments, loosen the clutch on the hi-hat stand. The clutch holds the top hi-hat cymbal to the pull rod, a thin pole at the top of the hi-hat stand. If the clutch is loosened, the top cymbal will rest on the bottom cymbal, which will create a “swooshy” sound. Or, tighten the clutch so that the top cymbal is tight against the bottom cymbal. Either configuration makes it possible to play various rhythms on the hi-hat while simultaneously doing double bass drumming.
