Traditional Hungarian cuisine tends to be rich in spices, heavy and primarily based on meats, seasonal vegetables, fruits, fresh bread, cheeses and honey. Foreigners typically remember such staple dishes as vegetable stew and cold fruit soups. For breakfast, Hungarians tend to eat a large meal that ranges from toast to a rich smorgasbord of Hungarian delicacies. - Cheese is served often at meals in Hungary, and breakfast is no exception. Native Hungarian cheeses include túró cheese, a type of cottage cheese found in strudel, körözött cheese, a spicy cheese spread made with sheep's milk, and a variety of basic cream cheeses. Körözött is prepared slightly differently by every Hungarian family.
- Hungarians are very much a meat-loving culture and breakfast is not spared in their desire for a good serving of véres hurka, a sausage made by cooking down the blood of an animal with meat. The sausage is made with rice, pig's blood and pork.
- Kifli is a traditional Hungarian yeast bread or pastry that is made by cutting sheets of dough into triangular wedges and wrapping those wedges to create a crescent-shaped morsel, which is then baked. It is made with sour cream, sugar, butter, flour and eggs, then injected with a sweet filling such as apricot butter.
- Children in Hungary often eat some type of hot breakfast pudding. One type is tejberizs, a kind of rice pudding that is usually topped with cocoa powder and sugar. It is finished with traditional Hungarian marmalade, made from oranges or blackberries.
- Villásreggeli is equivalent to the American brunch. It is a more elaborate type of combined breakfast and lunch. Some of the many dishes and foods include deviled eggs, cold steak, Hungarian pancakes, caviar from the Black Sea, foie gras, fruit salads, marmalade, fruit yogurt, fruit juices, champagne and traditional cakes and pastries.
