Bed Bugs, Don"t Let Them Bite

At bed time my parents would always say, Sweet Dreams - Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite.
I never had a vision of a nasty bug biting, for others around the world they deal with these pests on a daily basis.
What exactly are bed bugs? Can they be treated and removed? Wikipedia states Cimicidae or bed bugs (sometimes bedbugs), are small parasitic insects.
The most common type is Cimex lectularius.
The term usually refers to species that prefer to feed on human blood.
The name "bed bug" is derived from the insect's preferred habitat of houses and especially beds or other areas where people sleep.
Bed bugs, though not strictly nocturnal, are mainly active at night and are capable of feeding unnoticed on their hosts.
There has been a resurgence of bed bugs over the years.
The reason is believed to be due to larger populations of foreign travel, secondhand clothing, luggage, furniture and/or pets.
Unfortunately the cleanliness of your home or business has nothing to do with bed bugs arrival.
They just need a place to hide and a warm host.
They can easily spread from room to room quickly by crawling or hitchhiking on you or your pets.
A number of health effects may occur due to the bites.
Including, but not limited to, skin rashes, psychological effects such as anxiety, stress or insomnia, blisters and numerous allergic symptoms.
They feed mainly on exposed skin while you are sleeping.
Those areas are most commonly the face, neck, shoulders, arms, and sometimes feet or legs.
Bites, which are small welts, may not appear immediately or it may take anywhere from a couple of minutes or up to 9 days.
The welts most commonly appear in a line of three.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is what this pattern is referred to by infectious disease experts.
Diagnosis involves finding bed bugs, and elimination of the insect from the source.
Searching for bed bugs or signs of them at night is best since they are usually nocturnal.
They can be detected by their smell which they put off the smell of over-ripe raspberries.
Look in the creases of the mattress, head boards, small cracks in wall or paint and box springs.
You may find small blood smears on your sheet from killing a blood engorged one.
Since they molt five times before adulthood you may find light brown exoskeletons.
The bites normally last for a week or two and usually disappear on their own.
You can treat the occurrence with antihistamines to relieve the allergic symptoms and antiseptic or antibiotic to avoid infections from excess itching of the infected site.
They bites may need to be tended by a physician.
Bedbugs don't care what kind of house keeper your are.
They don't even care if you bath regularly.
They go where they can crawl or are carried.
Will set up home where the circumstances of the environment are conducive for them to thrive.
However, they can be treated and removed.
So the next time someone says, Don't let the bed bugs bite, you know what they are talking about and what to look for.
