How to Search Windows File Names
- 1). Click on the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of your computer screen.
- 2). Click on "Search" if there is no search box immediately visible. Otherwise, simply enter the name of the file you are searching for in the "Start Search" box.
- 3). Review the search results. The file you are looking for may be immediately visible in the list.
- 4). Adjust search parameters if you don't immediately find the files. You can broaden a search to include directories and file types that are ordinarily not visible in Windows. Alternatively, you can narrow search results by searching only particular directories or file types. Adjusting search parameters is different in each of the Windows operating systems. In Windows 7, click on "Add a search filter" to make adjustments. In Windows Vista, click on "Search everywhere". In Windows XP, select from the options in the box titled "Search by any or all of the criteria below".
- 5). Use a wildcard for file names you're not certain of. An asterisk (*) will stand in for one or more characters in a file name. For instance, a search on "finances20*" will return files named finances2009, finances2010, etc.
