- 1). Vacuum your carpet twice a week. Run your vacuum over the caret in even, parallel strokes. Go over high traffic areas up to 10 times, and three to four times in less used sections of the carpet. Vacuuming regularly will pick up the dead skin cells and dust that mites consume.
- 2). Clean your carpet at least once a year with a steam cleaner. This will thoroughly remove dead skin cells and mites, and keep your carpets looking clean. Carpet cleaners can be purchased, or you can rent one at your local supermarket.
- 3). Use an acaracide to kill the remaining dust mites. These are available under different brand names, and can be either a spray or powder. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. This pesticide will supplement the cleaning routine.
