How to Become an LAPD Cadet
- 1). Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements. You must be of the correct age, have no serious arrests or convictions, have good moral character and do well in school.
- 2). Ask for a letter of recommendation from a responsible adult that is not a relative, such as a faith leader. You will need to present this as part of your application.
- 3). Go through a medical examination, to qualify for the insurance granted to all cadets.
- 4). Attend the 96-hour-long Cadet Academy, which meets on Saturdays for 14 consecutive weeks. You'll develop physical and academic skills, as well as learn law enforcement skills, teamwork and leadership. Each training day lasts eight hours, including an hour for lunch.
- 5). Graduate from the Cadet Academy, which will officially make you an LAPD cadet. You must then participate in activities that will benefit the community. They will vary by post but you could be participating in the Academy Awards, working at division front desks, training for the bike patrol or joining the SWAT Fitness Challenge.
