    • 1). Clean up any food sources. Wipe up spills as soon as they happen. Don't leave dirty dishes in the sink. Wash dirty dishes right away, or rinse off leftover food and put them in the dishwasher. Pick up and clean pet bowls as soon as the animals are done eating and do not leave them out overnight. Store food in cockroach-proof containers.

    • 2). Remove water sources. Repair leaking pipes and faucets. Check window drains to make sure they are not clogged. Clogged window drains allow condensation to accumulate.

    • 3). Vacuum in cracks and crevices where cockroaches hide. Check the area under the refrigerator, between the range and countertop and around garbage cans.

    • 4). Place cockroach bait in areas where roaches have been spotted. Bait comes in the form of bait stations and gel. Gel can be squirted into the cracks where roaches hide. Be careful to follow the manufacturer's instructions, since cockroach bait is poisonous to pets and children.

    • 5). Spread boric acid or diatomaceous earth dust in dry areas where roaches hide. Dusts are effective over long periods as long as they stay dry, and do not require that the roaches consume the dust. Boric acid is a chemical insecticide, while diatomaceous earth works by cutting the waxy cuticle on the roaches' exoskeletons, causing them to dry out and die.

    • 6). Spray aerosol or liquid roach control sprays in areas where roaches have been spotted. Try to select a spray that includes a hormone growth regulator. Growth regulators provide long term control by forcing immature roaches to molt into sterile adults.
