Apple has released the third beta seed of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 to Mac developers. This latest beta, with build number 14D98g, hasn't been released to participants in the public beta program, only to developers.
The lack of a new public beta version release suggests that this build isn't stable enough for the general public, and has a few bugs that are likely to produce crashes or lockups.
The release notes show that the APIs for the new Force Touch trackpad are included with the build, allowing developers to make use of the new technology, which supports multiple types of clicks, in apps they're developing.
Also new in this build are additional data sources for the “Look Up” contextual menu item, which appears when you highlight a word. In past versions of OS X, the look up was limited to the built-in dictionary, and searching using the default search engine you had chosen. It appears OS X 10.10.3 will also gather information about the highlighted item from the iTunes Store and the Mac App Store, as well as nearby sources based on your location information.
One likely use of your location information could be that when checking reviews of movies or products, the local source could show where the movie is playing, or where you can purchase the items nearby.
The public beta version of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 will likely be updated sometime after the next developer release, once the new features have had the once-over from Mac developers.
I’m looking forward to a new public beta release, to see what features of Photos have been improved, and if UI elements have been changed or improved. Currently at its first beta release point, Photos has a number of items that don't quite work correctly.
It will be interesting to see how the Photos app matures during the beta stage.
