Teaching Children About the Local Police Department

Although bad news and crime seems to often be the focus of all the nightly news, there are actually many safe communities across our country.
In most cases, those communities are safe and secure in large part because of the local police departments and the great job police officers do in keeping crime and criminals at bay.
If you live in a community where the police department does a great job of keeping the streets safe, you should never miss a chance to show your appreciation.
One of the best ways you can support local officers is by teaching your children that police are a force for good in the community.
Doing so can also help protect your children from harm, since they will be more likely to seek out a police officer's help if they look at them with respect.
There are plenty of subtle ways to teach your children to respect police officers and appreciate the great things that your local department does.
When you see an officer while out on a walk with your kids, be sure to wave, say hello and say thanks for their service.
Later, mention to your kids how glad you are that your city has a police department that keeps local families so safe from crime.
Even more importantly, make sure that your children are aware that they should always seek out a police officer in uniform if they are ever in trouble by themselves.
Teaching everyone in your family how to dial emergency services is another great way to keep your loved ones safe, as well.
