    • 1). Decide on a business structure. Some of the common business structures include corporations, sole proprietorships, limited liability companies and partnerships. Different structures are appropriate for different types of business.

    • 2). Check with your state's division of corporations, commerce or business to determine what documents are necessary to file for the type of business you are starting. The division will typically be able to provide examples of the types of documents you need to file. Certain industries require additional documentation beyond the basic articles of organization.

    • 3). Write a description of the intention of your business. Keep this description about one paragraph long.

    • 4). Follow the steps of the online business registration system, if offered by your state, and enter the description when it asks for a description of the business. If your state does not have an online registration system, file the appropriate forms by mail or in person with the state agency.

    • 5). File the documents with your state's division that manages businesses. Check with this division to find out if there are local filing requirements in your city or county. If the division does not know, it can likely direct you to the contact in the local government who can tell you. You also must register for local, state and federal taxes.
