ABC's Of Air Source Heating System
* Air from the outside is blown over the heat exchanger. This extracts the hot air.
* The compressor in a heating system operates almost in a similar way as a refrigerator; the major difference is that the order is reversed. Thus, it helps in raising the temperature of the air extracted by the exchanger.
* There are under-floor heating tubes and radiators that help in the transfer of heat throughout the house.
Air source heating systems, in comparison to the conventional ones can save a lot of electricity bills. Thus, renewable energy experts consider these as "an ideal solution for urban or suburban setting". Such a system does not require much space for installation, which make these favourable where there are space constraints. Moreover, the efficiency of these air source heating systems is more than that of conventional ones. For every unit of electricity used, it produces 3 units of heat energy.
How does it work?
It is basically a system that is capable of providing both heating and cooling by using the mechanism of heat pumps, coils, and various components – condenser, compressor, evaporator, expansion valve, and refrigerant. On the outside there is a heat exchanger, which is used for heating or cooling the refrigerant. It basically uses the mechanism of "vapor compression refrigeration".
In this mechanism, the refrigerant, which is in liquid state (on low temperature), is passed through the evaporator coils. The temperature of the air or the latent heat results in the liquid boiling. The vapour is then used for increasing the temperature of the indoors.
Advantages of air source heating system
* Air source systems are easy to handle and requires uncomplicated installation.
* Such a system is easy to fit in newly constructed buildings as well as suitable for renovation and retrofit projects.
* Installation is cheaper than water source or geothermal heat pumps. As these have few moving parts, less maintenance is required.
* It is environment friendly as runs on electricity and not on fossil fuels. It used air as the source of heat so; there is no loss of energy in the process.
* It is also cost effective way of heating homes.
