Clogged Drain? When It"s Time to Call a Plumber
Modern conveniences sometimes don't act very modern.
This so true when we are talking about our plumbing and the myriad of problems than can and will confront the homeowner or renter.
Sometimes you need a drain unclogger.
Sewer systems are designed to take waste material and wastewater out of the building and carry it to the main sewer line so it can go to a treatment station to be cleaned and sanitized.
But what do you do when the drains won't drain? Drain cleaning may be needed.
Finding the problem can take moments, but fixing the problem can be a different matter.
If it is a simple man made problem, like a child's toy dropped in the commode and too much tissue dropped in to hide the toy, it is easy pull it out and throw away the trash kind of problem.
Drain cleaning may be what it takes after investigating the scene and you can't see a visible problem you reach for the handy dandy black rubber drain unclogger.
After several attempts to clear the line you find yourself with water everywhere but down the drain, and now is a good time to contact the plumber for professional drain cleaning.
If the obvious has been ruled out, the next step is to get a professional involved.
After determining where the blockage is, the plumber will bring out the drain cleaning equipment.
The electric drain unclogger has a cutting edged tip attached to a long, flexible cable that rotates.
This rotary drain unclogger will be pushed down a sewer cleanout in the direction of the clog.
The rotating blades will slice and dice the material into small pieces allowing the clog to follow the sewer pipe and into the main sewer line and out of your hair.
Sometimes the problem is a direct result of landscaping.
Older homes with vintage trees and bushes are plagued with this issue.
Again, the professional plumber is an expert in drain cleaning when roots have the sewer line blocked.
Tree roots will find water! If your lines are very old, the trees and bushes have been at work to get a drink, and in doing so close off the line.
When the roots invade, material that is flushed through the line gets hung up and then the real blockage begins to add up.
The avid do it yourselfer might think about a rental company and attempt to run an electric sewer snake down the line in their attempt at drain cleaning.
This is an iffy and often costly mistake.
If your home is plumbed with plastic sewer lines, being a sewer zealot can be a good thing, if you are a plumber and a nightmare if you don't know what you are doing.
Sewer and drain cleaning equipment is really best left in the hands of a pro.
If the cutter head on the end of the cable gets snagged the cutter will cut a hole in the line and the raw sewage can escape and start undermining the sewer line.
This, if left unchecked can cause a sinkhole or worse, raw sewage and the odor will come to the surface and this will make you a bad neighbor.
When you don't know what to do about a clog, and you are not an adept drain unclogger, don't guess call a pro, it will fix the problem and save you money and time.
