- 1). Test the pH level of your pool. You can purchase pH testing strips from pool stores and local health food stores. The pool's pH needs to be between 7.2 to 7.8. When algae is present, your pH will likely be lower.
- 2). Add 1 cup of ammonia per 3,200 gallons of water in your pool.
- 3). Allow the ammonia to sit in the pool for 24 hours. Do not use the pool during this time.
- 4). Re-test the pH level of your pool. The pH should be higher now and closer to the optimal range between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH is still too low, add 1 cup of ammonia per 3,200 gallons of water in your pool as directed above in step 2. Again, allow the ammonia to sit in the pool for 24 hours. Do not use the pool during this time.
- 5). Retest the pH level of your pool. The pH should be within the optimal range by now.
- 6). Suck up all the dead algae with your pool vacuum.
