Although they're not cuddly pets they're still fun to have around.
It is easy to build a simple chicken coop so you can have the pleasure of chickens in your backyard.
And chickens are okay with being handled, if they are used to being handled.
Makes sense right? If a chicken is used to your presence and being handled since they were soft baby chicks then they will let you handle them as full grown hens.
If every time you fed them you called "Here chickie, chickie..
..
" That will keep them used to your presence too.
Sounds so silly right? But it actually works.
When they are baby chicks take care not to squeeze them...
I say this because I know of well meaning grownups who buy baby chicks for kids on Easter and the poor chicks don't make it through the day.
Awful I know, baby chicks are delicate and children often cuddle them to hard..

squeezing them to death.
Not a pretty picture.
Please be mindful of over zealous kids wanting to play with baby chicks.
With that said chickens do make great pets because they can teach responsibility.
They may not be the traditional pet but that seems to be changing.
More and more people are finding space in their backyards to build a simple chicken coop and some very fancy chicken coops.
And of course chickens do lay eggs so having the responsibility of collecting those eggs can give a child a real sense of pride helping with an important chore.
