Sacagawea, also spelled Sacajawea, claims legendary status in American culture as the Shoshone woman who led Lewis and Clark from North Dakota west to the Pacific Ocean, using her interpreter skills to converse with locals and carrying her newborn baby along on the journey. Her role in the exploration of the West has earned her a number of monuments, including an educational center, statues and the Sacagawea dollar coin. - Located just east of Salmon, Idaho, the Sacajawea Interpretive Center is dedicated to commemorating and teaching about Sacagawea's life and her contribution to the Corps of Discovery mission. The center hosts an interpretive center with videos and educational displays, as well as an outdoor school for hands-on learning, an outdoor theater and amphitheater and a community garden growing heritage varieties of produce. Statues of Sacagawea and artifacts are on display at the center. The Sacajawea Interpretive Center is open during the summer months.
- More than a dozen statues of Sacagawea have been commissioned and are displayed at parks, forts and state buildings. A few statues of note include a bronze statue of Sacagawea at the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Astoria, Oregon; a statue of Sacagawea and her baby on the grounds of the state capitol building in Bismarck, North Dakota--which needed a special permit to be displayed on state grounds that are not supposed to have any statuary; and a statue of Sacagawea on the grounds of the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas.
- One of the most notable tributes to important figures in U.S. history is to be immortalized on a piece of currency. In 2000, the U.S. mint placed an image of Sacagawea on a golden dollar coin. The piece was created by artist Glenna Goodacre, using a 22-year-old Shoshone woman as the model for Sacagawea. The picture depicts a partial profile of Sacagawea and includes her baby in the picture. The Sacagawea dollar is one of only two dollar coins in circulation as of 2010.
