How to Make an American Native Worry Feather
- 1). Measure the length of the basket handle from where it touches one side of the basket to the other side. Cut lengths of raffia about three times the measurement of the handle. Use natural tones of raffia in one or more colors.
- 2). Tape 1 inch of an end of raffia to a beginning point at one end of the handle. Begin to wrap the raffia around the handle. Keep the raffia close together as you wrap, if you are using only one color. Space it out somewhat to accommodate more colors.
- 3). Cut off any excess of raffia, except the last inch, after wrapping the handle from one end to the other. Push the two raffia ends into the seams of the basket edge and fasten with hot glue. Repeat the wrapping process until you are happy with the look of the handle.
- 4). Put a line of hot glue in the center inside bottom of the basket. Press soft feathers into the glue. Continue to add rows of soft feathers until the bottom and sides of the inside are covered.
- 5). Tie bunches of three medium-sized feathers together, at the quill end, with 6-inch pieces of leather lacing. Leave the excess lacing hanging loose on the feather bundles. Make several bundles of feathers to fit around the edge of the basket.
- 6). Cut a circle or rectangle from leather for each bundle of feathers. Use hot glue to attach the leather pieces all around the outside rim of the basket. Glue one feather bundle, at the quill end, onto each piece of leather.
- 7). Use a 1 foot piece of leather lacing to tie five large feathers together in a bundle, at the quill end. Glue the bundle onto the center of one side of the basket just behind one of the smaller feather bundles.
- 8). Make two bundles of raffia, 2 feet long. Tie one bundle to each end of the basket handle.
