How to Use Heraldry on Something Other Than a Coat of Arms

    • 1). Study heraldic symbols to give you ideas for your family design. Look at how a heraldic design uses individual symbolism to project a collective meaning. Think about what symbols are relevant to your own family. This can include a family trade, where the family originates from and even the family name.

    • 2). Use your heraldic design on a personal letterhead. Using this letterhead can be particularly meaningful when writing to members of the family. This may also stimulate the family into coming up with heraldic ideas of their own.

    • 3). Create a mug design featuring your heraldic symbols. This could also include a humorous family motto. Using humor with some of your heraldic symbols will deflect any accusations of pomposity.

    • 4). Design a set of dinner plates that includes your heraldic design. The plates can be used for decoration in addition to being used for their primary purpose. For instance, the plates can become a key part of a medieval themed children's party.

    • 5). Print your heraldic design onto stickers. The stickers can be of various types, to be used in various ways, including on luggage bags, sports bags, car windows and front door windows. As with the mugs, using a humorous motto to accompany the design is an option.
