Walking Your Way to Total Fitness

103 11
Walking has always been an excellent way to maintain total fitness.
And now there's even more proof.
A new study finds that by walking 100 steps a minute you can keep in shape.
What this means is that intensity is everything.
The findings, reported by researchers at San Diego State University, used pedometers to count the number of steps as participants worked out on treadmills at different speeds.
What they discovered was that a pace of 100 steps or more was sufficient for a workout to be considered of moderate intensity.
But what exactly is moderate intensity? The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defines it as being 55 - 69 percent of your maximum heart rate.

Researchers also noted the U.
S.
government recommendations that you should engage in moderately intensive activity for at least 150 minutes a week.
And you don't have to do it in one evening.
To obtain the benefits, you can divide it into five 30-minute sessions.
And given that statistics reveal that even a larger percentage than ever before are obese, and since those who fall into this category use their weight as an excuse not to exercise, it is a pretty lame argument to say walking exercises are too taxing.
For an even more intensive workout, walk with hand weights.
To avoid injury, just make sure there not to heavy.
For starters, I suggest you go with one pounders.
This should be light enough for everyone since another study revealed that the average weight of a woman's purse is around 5 pounds (2.
37 kilos)!
