Tips on Moving Into New Construction
- Have all utilities turned on in the home. Make sure all packed cartons are labeled as to which room or area they belong in. Pack some necessities to have on hand on moving day which should include trash bags, paper towels, liquid hand soap, bathroom paper, light bulbs, bottled water, a pen and paper, a phone, a tool kit with a cordless screwdriver and knife, furniture sliders, floor runners and an emergency kit with bandages to leave in the house. The day before the move, If time allows, buy blinds for private rooms and install them in the windows of the rooms needing privacy, including bedrooms and bathrooms.
- Check to be sure all systems in the new home are working. Make sure the hot water heater, furnace (or air conditioner) and refrigerator are working properly. Take furniture sliders (small discs that fit under heavy furniture and allow you to move large furniture easily) and leave on the kitchen counter for easy finding. Place plastic runners on pathways to prevent damage and grime on new carpet or flooring. By now, you would have scoped out the placement of furnishings in most areas in the home. Tape a paper sign on each door or entry of each room to identify what the room is or which room it will be so movers can coordinate marked boxes with the correct room. On this night, get a good night's rest because move-in day is long and tiring.
- As early in the morning as possible, meet and supervise movers in moving furnishings into the home. Have movers place each piece of furniture in the correct room. Use the sliders for large heavy pieces as you maneuver them into place, leaving room to connect electrical cords to outlets. Try to have boxes placed in the correct room, but place along a wall away from furniture locations, such as beds which need to be assembled. Have miscellaneous boxes placed in the garage to clear space to work. Set up beds in each bedroom first, then place smaller furniture in logical locations.
