Home Security and Common Sense With Kids
If you're thinking about home security with kids in the house, here are a few tips to help safeguard your home and your family.
Home security tip #1: Always put away cleaning products. I have a bad habit of leaving the bleach on top of the washer instead of putting it up on the shelf where it belongs. This can be disastrous if you leave out something that doesn't have a childproof lid! Always keep your chemical products far above where little arms can reach.
Home security tip #2: Don't fill up your bathtub and then walk away for a minute. Unattended bathtubs can be dangerous for children.
Home security tip #3: If you own firearms of any kind, always keep them unloaded and out of reach. If you can invest in a safe or a lockbox of some kind, even better. Nothing is more dangerous than a small child with a loaded weapon.
Home security tip #4: Keep all stairways blocked off until your child is old enough to walk up and down without assistance. For a small body, a fall down the stairs can be deadly. Better to deal with the frustrations of a baby gate than to suffer the consequences of not having one.
Home security tip #5: Watch out for things your child might choke on. If your older children have toys with small pieces, have a family meeting with them to discuss how important it is to keep those out of reach so that the baby can't get hurt.
Home security tip #6: If you have pets, keep them up to date on their vaccines, and make sure they're trained not to jump on small children. Invest in some puppy/dog training classes, and take your children along so they can learn how to train the dog as well.
Home security tip #7: Always use outlet covers. Little fingers + electrical sockets = disaster.
Home security tip #8: Make sure your doors and windows stay locked. You want outsiders on the outside, and you want your little insiders to stay indoors where you can see them. If your toddler is tall enough to reach the door locks, install a set of locks at a higher location on the door.
Home security tip #9: Be prepared for emergency situations, and make sure your children know what to do in all emergencies. Plan out a fire route, teach the kids their address and how to dial 911. Make sure your kids know the neighbors and vice-versa. Make a kit for emergency situations (water, first aid, blankets, canned food, back-up cell phone with emergency numbers already plugged in, extra set of car keys, etc), and change the kit based on the season.
Those are all good home security basics. And the best home security step you can take for your family is to install a wireless security system from ADT Security. It's easy to get one: just contact Protect Your Home, your local ADT authorized dealer.
ADT alarm systems are simple enough that even your children can learn how to use them. With ADT Security on the job, someone will have an eye on your home and your children 24 hours a day. If a threat or emergency ever arises, you can push a home alarm button, then focus on the problem at hand while ADT alerts the police for you. ADT alarms provide better home security than door locks, smoke alarms, or first aid training.
That's why we say that when it comes to safe kids, ADT Security takes home security to the next level.
