How to Reset a Laptop to Its Original Format

    • 1). Backup any desired data from your computer using an external hard drive or USB flash drive. If you do not wish to backup any data, skip this step.

    • 2). Restart your computer. If you are using a Dell or HP laptop press Control + F11 when the manufacturer logo appears to automatically enter the system restore menu. If you are not using a Dell or HP computer simply press "Pause/Break" when text appears.

    • 3). Insert your installation CD or DVD into your computer's disc drive and then press "Enter" to boot from the installation disc.

    • 4). Press any key when prompted to "Press Any Key". You will be asked if you wish to perform a system repair, or enter setup. Select "Enter Setup."

    • 5). Select the hard drive or partition you wish to install windows to. It is recommended that you leave at least 12 gigabytes free for a Windows system partition or drive. Select your desired local hard drive, and then choose "Format" to format the drive for a clean installation.

    • 6). Follow any remaining on screen prompts. The installation process should take between 15 and 45 minutes depending on your hardware and version of Windows. When the installation is complete, you should be prompted to restart your computer. Remove the windows installation CD from the disc drive and then restart the computer.

      You will be asked a final series of questions in regards to your user account preferences and time zone. Enter the correct information and your installation process should be complete. If you chose to backup data from your previous Windows install, you can move these files back to your local hard drive.
