Prospective students who want to pursue a graduate degree in psychology at University of California, Berkeley, must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and submit three letters of recommendation. Prospective students must submit applications by December 1 for the next academic school year beginning in the fall semester. Applicants may choose one of five emphasis areas when pursuing a Ph.D. graduate degree. - The Behavioral Neuroscience program focuses on the neurological and physiological cause of certain behaviors in both humans and animals. Specializations within this department include neuroethology, sensory systems, hormones and how they affect behavior, and learning and memory.
- The Change, Plasticity and Development program focuses on how humans develop and change throughout their life spans. This program addresses emotional, social and cognitive development along with other physiological processes. In addition, students in this program will explore ways to prevent and treat atypical development.
- The Clinical Psychology programs train students to use psychological assessments to understand human psychological problems in cognitive, behavioral, affective and health-related aspects. This program focuses on treatment and prevention of psychological problems. Graduates from this program will be prepared to work as researchers, teachers and human service directors.
- The Cognition, Brain and Behavior graduate program focuses on cognitive neuroscience and cognitive psychology. This program seeks to use MRI and EEG information to find the neural bases for certain human behaviors. Students in this program can specialize in language, problem solving and thinking, emotion, motor control, learning and memory, cognitive development, working memory and attention, or perceptions and sensory information.
- Graduate students pursuing a Ph.D. in psychology with an emphasis in Social Psychology and Personality will study how others affect individual behavior and how personality develops. Other study topics will include organization and group interactions, interpersonal relations, motivation and emotion, social cognition and culture and identity.
