How to Hook Up a Power Generator to Your House
- 1). Plug your appliance (refrigerator, television, lamp, etc.) into a heavy-duty extension cord intended for exterior generator use.
- 2). Run the cord to the power generator, where you will plug it into the socket.
- 3). Check product manuals or packaging to ensure your extension cord can handle the current requirements of your appliance. Use a larger extension cord if necessary.
- 1). Hire an experienced electrician to wire the generator into your home's circuit panel---the easiest way to guarantee you have a safe and functional generator.
- 2). Install (or have your electrician install) a sub panel that will redirect power from the main circuit panel and transfer switch to send a signal to your generator to start when power loss occurs. Electrical lines that come into the house from the generator will connect to one side of the transfer switch.
- 3). Select circuits you'll need in an emergency, such as those connection to the kitchen and lighting, for the generator to power.
- 4). If your generator relies on natural gas, install a high-pressure gas meter to ensure your generator runs correctly. This will replace a low-pressure gas meter. Lay a tracing wire next to your buried natural gas pipe to help locate it.
- 5). Move the switches in your transfer switch to "Generator" during a power outrage. When power returns, move the switch back to "Line" or "Normal."
