- 1). Test your pool's water with the test kit. Follow the manufacturer's directions to obtain an accurate reading of chlorine, pH and alkalinity.
- 2). Adjust the pH and alkalinity levels in your pool according to the test kit's directions. Use pH increaser or decreaser to achieve a level a 7.2 to 7.8 pH range. Add alkalinity increaser to achieve the alkalinity range of 80 to 100ppm (parts per million).
- 3). Re-test the pool water. Compare the chlorine reading to the test kit instructions.
- 4). Add chlorine to pool. Follow the directions from the chlorine manufacturer when filling the floating chlorine dispenser.
- 5). Introduce a stabilizer to the pool water. Follow the manufacturer's directions for adding this to the water. Pool water stabilizers slow down the chemical breakdown of chlorine.
- 6). Filter the pool at least eight hours each day during the swimming season. Increase filtering time to remove debris quicker from the pool. Excessive debris can break down chlorine faster than normal.
- 7). Test the pool water every few days to ensure chlorine levels do not fall below the recommended levels.
