Mildew Smell in a Maytag Atlantis Washer
- Mildew is a black and white colored collection of fungal spores that thrive in dark and damp places. Those with compromised immune systems and allergies should be particularly careful around mildew as it can irritate the skin and lead to respiratory conditions. When dealing with mold and mildew, always wear gloves, a face mask and protective glasses.
- Remove any clothing that may be in the washing machine, and set it aside. Add a powdered laundry detergent to water to make them water sudsy, and dip a brush into it for cleaning. You can use the brush and solution to clean around seals and scrub the barrel of the washer. Any removable trays can be taken out and washed in the soapy water.
- Turn the washing machine on, and add 2 cups of white vinegar or chlorine bleach to the water. Use the hot water setting as the heat will help to kill off any lingering mildew. Allow the cycle to run all the way through before opening up the lid to inspect for any remaining smell. If it needs it, repeat this process until the odor is gone.
- Wipe down the inside of your washing machine with a clean dry towel. Leave the lid up to allow it some time to air out and evaporate any residual moisture. The lid should stay up for at least an hour. Placing a fan nearby or opening up a window can help fresh air to get in.
