How to Recycle Cans & Glass

    • 1). Find the contact information for your local recycling center. You can call your local government office to get the contact information, or you can use online resources, such as Earth 911.

    • 2). Contact your local recycling center to find out how they prefer the recyclable materials to be separated. Many will require that glass be separated by color and cans be separated by types of metal, such as aluminum and tin.

    • 3). Organize your materials by using the recycling symbols stamped on the bottom of each item. The symbol itself, which is a triangle made of arrows, is all you'll need to determine whether glass can be recycled. Plastic, on the other hand, has the numbers 1-7 located inside of the general recycling symbol. Create seven separate piles for plastics, while keeping in mind that numbers 1, 2, and 4 are most likely to be able to be recycled. The other piles will depend on the resources available where you live.

    • 4). Transport your glass items and cans to your local recycling center. Keep the different types of recyclable items in different containers and let the recycling service worker know which type of material is in which container when you drop it off.
