    Controlling Hyperglycemia

    • 1). Check your blood sugar level if you develop any symptoms of hyperglycemia. In addition to high urination, hunger and thirst, the Mayo Clinic reports that people experiencing high blood sugar may undergo blurred vision and feel very tired. Testing blood sugar is necessary to confirm that you are having a hyperglycemic episode.

    • 2). Use exercise to bring down your blood sugar level quickly. However, do not exercise when there are ketones present in your blood; the American Diabetes Association reports that this can actually cause your blood sugar to continue to rise. The Joslin Diabetes Center reports that ketone home tests are available for purchase.

    • 3). Try adjusting your diet. The Mayo Clinic suggests consuming less food and avoiding sugary foods in order to curb episodes of hyperglycemia. Working with a dietitian can help people with diabetes learn to partially control their illness through diet.

    • 4). Visit your doctor if you have frequent hyperglycemic episodes. According to the Mayo Clinic, this may indicate the dose or timing of your medication may need to be altered in order to better suit the needs of treating your condition.
