Effective Ways of Sanitizing a Surface

Soap and Water

• This is the oldest and most basic method of sanitizing. Contrary to what the cleaning product companies might say, you can effectively sanitize a surface by scrubbing it down with hot, soapy water and a paper towel. The hotter the water, the more effective the sanitizing. Allow the soapy water to sit for at least three minutes before wiping clean. Wipe any remaining water with a fresh paper towel. Use a paper towel instead of a sponge for maximum sanitizing efficacy.
  
  

Sanitizing Wipes

• Remove germs from surfaces like keyboards, telephones and other electronics that can't get wet with sanitizing wipes. These wipes are often more gentle than harsh cleaning products, making them popular in daycare settings. The longer you expose a surface to a cleaning agent, the more effective the results. Therefore, using two sanitizing wipes may be necessary to keep the surface wet. You can find sanitizing wipes at any store, gas station or pharmacy.
  
  

Steam

• Hot water over 130 degrees Fahrenheit effectively cleans and sanitizes any nonporous surface. Use this option for floors or flat surfaces like play tables. No additional soap, cleaning agents or chemicals are necessary if you use steam. You can purchase a household steam mop at your local grocery or hardware store. Note that using steam on porous surfaces like wood or carpeting can cause warping and mold.
  
  

Household Cleaner

• Generously spray the surface with a sanitizing household cleaner. Allow the product to sit for three minutes before wiping dry with a clean paper towel. Choose a product appropriate for the surface area. For example, don't use your bathroom sanitizing product to wipe down your kitchen counters unless the product instructions instruct you to. Many companies will specify disinfecting, sanitizing or antibacterial properties on the label.
