Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas of the feet, hands or ears that correspond with areas in the body resulting in a physiological change. With more acceptance by health professions, it became clear that practitioners needed to take more responsibility in ensuring that the practice met certain levels of competencies and standards. As a result the American Reflexology Certification Board (ARCB) was formed in 1991. To become certified you must already be practicing reflexology. - Be a high school graduate, 18 years or older, and have completed a 110-hour reflexology course and have at least 90 postgraduate sessions documented on forms provided by ARCB.
- Pay a fee of $295 (as of 2010) and complete the test as set out by the ARCB. The test is comprised of three components: a written exam to test theory and analytical skills; a documentations section to test the ability to assess and document and a practical test that tests hands-on ability and communication skills.
- Passing the written exam requires a score of at least 80 percent. The documentations and practical components require a minimum of 3.0, 1.0 being the best and 5.0 the lowest. Notification of results is given within 4-6 weeks. If any component is failed, as of 2010, there is a re-test fee of $100 and if documentations is involved there is a fee of $75.
- Achieving a passing grade in all three components allows certification and registration with ARCB. To maintain certification, you must complete 12 units of continuing education every two years, with an annual fee.
