How to Plan for Can Lights

104 3
    • 1). Measure the length and width of the ceiling with a tape measure. This will give you the total area you have to work with.

    • 2). Make a diagram of the ceiling on a sheet of paper to determine how many rows of lights will be needed and how far they should be spaced apart.

    • 3). Decide how many lights will be needed in the room. The number of lights will depend on the type of wattage you plan to use for the light bulbs. The higher the wattage, the fewer lights you will need.

    • 4). Determine how far the lights should be placed from the wall. The typical ratio is 2 feet to 8 feet. This means that an 8-foot ceiling will have a can light placed 2 feet away from the wall.

    • 5). Calculate the spacing that is needed between the can light housings. The amount of spacing between the housing will depend on the number of objects that need to be illuminated on the wall.
