Homemade Traps

    • 1). Plan your strategy. Choose a spot where you see the animal often and set up your trap there. Putting the trap in a spot that the animal frequents will give you a better chance of success. Increase the animal's motivation by "prepping" the area, i.e., leave food in that spot for several nights in a row.

    • 2). Set up your trap. Screw an eyehook into the roof side of the box to act as your pulley in the trap. Put a piece of plywood on the ground to serve as the bottom of your trap. Put the box on top of the plywood so that it will form a closed box; prop one side of the box up on a stick or rod.

    • 3). Bait your trap. Tie one end of the string to a treat. The treat you use will depend on the animal: for raccoons, possums and cats, meat will work well. For skunks, fruit might be a better choice. Run the other end of the string through the hook and down to the base of the stick or rod. Pull the string so that the treat is held up near the top of the trap. The animal should be forced to pull the treat down to eat it, thereby pulling the rod out from under the open side of the box and closing the trap.

    • 4). Monitor the trap every day until you catch the animal. At that point, press the plywood to the box and turn it over so that the plywood is on top. Use a hammer and nails to secure the plywood to the box, producing a secure enclosure. Take the animal to your local wildlife rescue association or drive it out of town and release it yourself.
