Single-Cylinder Deadbolt

• The single-cylinder deadbolt is recommended for home security because, unlike the rim lock, the lock cannot be forced back into the cylinder due to applied pressure or leverage. The single-cylinder is the least expensive deadbolt type, can be installed without professional help, and is ideal if there is no other way to access the inside of your home. Single-cylinders are not particularly helpful on doors with glass panels, whereas a potential intruder could break the glass, reach inside and turn the latch to gain entry.
  
  

Double-Cylinder Deadbolt

• Double-cylinder deadbolts are more expensive than single-cylinder deadbolts and may require professional installation depending on your skill level and familiarity with locks. Double-cylinders boast a security advantage over single in that they require a key to operate both the inside and outside of the lock. Surface-Mount Deadbolt

• Surface-mount deadbolts are less expensive than double-cylinders, but hold an advantage over standard single-cylinders in that the entire lock mechanism is on the inside of the door. They are less susceptible to breaking and damage from a would-be intruder on the outside of the door. These locks are also more difficult to install than single-cylinders, and thus may require professional installation.
