Definition:

A naturally occuring member of the B vitamin family; found in high concentrations in dark green vegetables and members of the legume family, which include beans and peanuts.

Folate is important for a variety of body functions, including:
  • Making DNA
  • Repairing tissues like blood vessels
  • Manufacturing red blood cells

Evidence shows that folate is a vital nutrient for pregnant women and that it may help prevent high blood pressure.

Folate is added to many foods such as breakfast cereals, breads, and packaged meals. This synthetic folate is called folic acid.
