How to Determine the Sex of a Hippopotamus

104 20
    • 1). Observe the hippo from a distance if you are in the wild, or get as close as possible at the zoo. If the hippo is walking about, you can likely see whether it has a penis or not. If the hippo is resting or submerged in water, it will be difficult to see its genitalia.

    • 2). Compare all the hippos you see. Assume the smaller ones you see are females, if not juvenile hippos. Male hippos will also act aggressively if another male enters his territory. Female hippos will likely not fight with other hippos.

    • 3). Look for baby hippos. If you see young hippos, they will likely be congregating near their mother, allowing you to determine the sex of that hippo.

    • 4). Look at the hippos' tusks. Although both male and female hippos have two pairs of tusks, the tusks of the male are slightly larger than those of the female.
