Buying a Chicken in the Market

106 32
I did say I was not a vegetarian, so off we went to the market to buy ourselves a live chicken for lunch. We tied its legs with a spare hair tie I happened to have, so the chicken would not flap around too much in the back of the taxi, en route to Simonga village to cook it. More information below...

This is a traditional cooking trip, so a live chicken is part of the deal unless you state you are a vegetarian. In this case Victor, my guide, was nice enough to carry the chicken under its wings while we shopped for our vegetables in the market. We tied its legs together to transport it to the village safely. While I was touring the various homesteads in the village, the ladies who were helping cook, killed and plucked it.

So by the time I was ready to help out, it was already simmering in its pot, looking tasty. It was indeed very tasty, but a bit tough. That's what you get with a free-range, organic chicken!
