Proven Research Shows How Pure Essential Oils Are Your Best Defense Against MRSA
We know it as MRSA, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
It has also been referred to as the staph infection.
This antibiotic resistant infection that used to be confined primarily to hospitals has made its way into our communities and worse of all, our children's schools.
While others are looking at antibiotics to treat this infection.
I have learned of a safe and natural alternative that has been proven effective against MRSA.
First, let's talk a bit about MRSA and what it is.
The form of MRSA that is making headlines is also known as community-acquired MRSA or CA-MRSA.
MRSA or staph infections were treated successfully with penicillin 50 years ago.
But over time, strains of this infection have mutated and are now resistant to many common antibiotic formulations.
The concern is that it is now becoming resistant to even the strongest of the antibiotics that had worked up until recently.
In fact, the Mayo Clinic describes CA-MRSA as, "a rapidly evolving bacterium, and it may be a matter of time before it, too, becomes resistant to most antibiotics.
" Because MRSA is contracted by skin to skin contact or from contact with personal items or surfaces that were exposed by infected persons, it can be easily spread.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines the 5 C's as how MRSA can be contracted: - Crowding - frequent skin-to-skin Contact - Compromised skin (i.
e.
, cuts or abrasions) - Contaminated items and surfaces - lack of Cleanliness.
They go on to say that locations where the 5 C's are common include schools, dormitories, military barracks, households, and daycare centers.
And now, the good news: Researchers at the University of Manchester say they have identified three essential oils that killed MRSA and E.
coli as well as many other bacteria and fungi within just two minutes of contact.
Patchouli, Melaleuca Alternifolia (commonly known as tea tree), geranium, lavender essential oils and Citricidal (grapefruit seed extract) were used singly and in combination to assess their anti-bacterial activity against MRSA and other strains of Staphylococcus aureus.
The abstract of the study states that a combination of Citricidal and geranium oil showed the greatest-anti-bacterial effects against MRSA.
That against the methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus a combination of geranium and tea tree oil was most active.
In separate study, the essential oils that found to be the most effective against MRSA, in order of speed of effectiveness, are the following: 1.
geranium 2.
tea tree 3.
lavender 4.
peppermint 5.
spearmint In a third study, conducted at Weber State University, it was found that diffusing Thieves essential oil blend of rosemary, eucalyptus, cinnamon, clove and lemon, was effective at killing more than 99% of airborne bacteria, including strains of staph.
Clearly, these studies demonstrate the potential of essential oils and essential oil vapors as antibacterial agents and for use in the treatment of MRSA and staph infections.
It is equally important to note here that all essential oils are not the same.
It is critical to use only pure and unadulterated essential oils.
In the U.
S.
, an essential oil can be labeled as 100% pure if it contains as little as 5% essential oil and 95% of any additive.
Often times those additives are man-made chemicals and the details do not have to be disclosed on the label.
So, how do you know what you are getting?Always do your research and read your labels.
Therapeutic grade essential oils are safe to use as inhalants for aromatherapy, to use topically and to take internally.
Any oils that do not allow topical application and/or internal use, are not therapeutic grade and are not pure.
As you can see, there is a solution for MRSA..
..
..
one that is natural, pure and free of harmful side effects.
And best of all, it is one that also works to help you prevent your child or family member from contracting MRSA, as well.
