The Adirondack Chair
This remote area of New York State is resplendent with stunning cobalt colored lakes and vast pristine hardwood forests.
The forest preserve is unique, and the mountains are is rich in tradition and folklore.
The Adirondack Chair was designed in 1903 by a man named Thomas Lee who was on vacation from Westport, NY and needed some truly comfortable chairs for his summer home.
After experimenting with several prototypes, he produced the chair with eleven pieces of wood that he cut from a single board.
The chair had a straight back and the seat tilted for better stability on the steep inclines of the mountainous region.
The chair featured the wide armrests that have become the hallmark of the design.
The early chairs were dubbed "Westport Plank Chairs.
" That might have been the end to the story if it weren't for a man named Harry Bunnell.
It seems, Harry owned a small carpentry shop and needed a source of income to sustain him through the harsh and brutal Adirondack winters.
Harry quickly understood the value in the simple, sturdy, and comfortable chair, and realized he'd stumbled upon a unique niche market for the Westport Mountain crowd.
Without asking for Lee's permission he filed for and received a patent for the Adirondack chair in 1904.
For the next twenty years Mr.
Bunnell manufactured the chairs.
The early chairs were all made of hemlock and signed by the manufacturer.
The original colors were green, or a medium dark brown.
The chair has withstood the test of time and today you can find them in a variety of colors, stains, and materials, including cedar and poly resin.
The chairs can be purchased unstained so that they will weather naturally or stained so that they preserve the natural color of the wood.
Of course they can be painted to match the color of your other patio furniture.
The chair is an excellent choice for porches, patios, bed and breakfasts, and any where a durable and comfortable chair is needed.
The chair has a character all it's own and they are admired for their simple and beautiful functionality.
Cedar Adirondack chairs are ideal for high humid areas but the red grain will turn to a silver ash color if left untreated.
Poly resin chairs are becoming more popular because of they have the ability to be folded and taken wherever they are needed.
The chair surrounds you with comfort and the gentle slant of the seat make them a pleasure to lounge in.
They are extremely relaxing to read in and blend well with other furniture and landscaping themes.
