How to Grow Daylilies in Containers

    • 1). Place a 1-inch layer of heavy gravel in the bottom of a pot that holds at least 3 gallons, followed by a good-quality potting soil. Fill the container almost to the top with the soil. The pot should have drainage holes in the bottom to prevent the soil in the pot from becoming saturated when watering.

    • 2). Dig a hole in the soil deep enough to hold either the soil that the daylily plant is already growing in or that the bare roots will fit in. Plant the crown of the daylily just below the surface level and back fill the soil around the roots and 1 inch above the crown. Press the soil down firmly to support the plant.

    • 3). Trim any exposed foliage back to around 5 to 6 inches from the soil line. This will encourage new growth. Water the soil thoroughly so it is damp, but not wet. Continue to water your daylilies regularly, keeping the soil moist.

    • 4). Remove any seed pods that form while the daylily is blooming to encourage more blooms to form. Save the pods to propagate new daylilies from seed.
