8 Grossest Cleaning Jobs Around the House

These 8 jobs are the grossest and ickiest ones around the house. Find out how to keep them from being so icky and how to dig in and get the gross jobs done.

1. Toilets

I hate all the toilets in the whole world.  Cleaning toilets is by far my least favorite chore.  It is at least tied with ironing, which is not gross, just tedious. To make this chore less gross, I like to use a combination of maintenance methods and fantastic toilet cleaning tools.  Toilet drop-ins and gels can release a little cleaning fluid with each flush to prevent build-up from occurring. Long-handled brushes and disposable cleaning heads also work to make more intense cleanings less gross for you.

2. Refrigerator Spills

It happens all the time.  Something in the refrigerator leaks, spills, or burst open.  And it always seems to happen on one of the top most shelves, where the substance leaks down all the way past the drawers to the bottom of the fridge. Refrigerator spills can then harden or gel to make a difficult mess that sticks to other food and containers.  If you've had a spill you may need to do a complete refrigerator cleaning. Warm water with dish soap will be your best friend.  The warm water helps to remove even sticky messes, while the dish soap is mild enough to be used throughout the refrigerator and helps remove odors. Add a little baking soda to the refrigerator for especially troublesome spills.

3. Ovens

Baked on food and grease turns into a layer of blackened nastiness that seems impossible to remove. Despite our best intentions, the interior of our ovens can become a nightmare to clean. This residue may require some extra elbow grease and a great oven cleaner to fully remove.  If you want to use more natural cleaners like baking soda, you may need a little more time and effort, but it's completely possible to get the same level of clean.

4. Forgotten Laundry

Maybe you got busy and forgot a load as it sat in the washing machine for a few extra hours...or days.  Or maybe some really gross laundry was forgotten in a duffel bag after a recent camping trip.  No matter what the reason, forgotten laundry usually smells. And it usually smells bad.  For these loads of laundry, extended washes and rinses will be key to removing odors.  I recommend running the items through a wash cycle in the warmest water available

5. Trash Cans

Trash cans hold some of our ickiest things and because of this they  need to be cleaned out frequently.  A little bit of maintenance goes a long way with trash cans.  But even with frequent maintenance a good deep cleaning needs to be performed several times a year on your trash cans.More »

6. Drains

Drains can get gross in a hurry without proper maintenance.  A clogged drain is one of the worst messes to deal with, so preventative care is a must.  Regular simple steps  with common household products can prevent most clogs.

7. Vomit and Stains

Sickness happens.  But the after effects of sickness can leave a mess to clean up. If vomit or other sickness stains have you down, there's not a lot you can do to prevent the mess.  But there are some things to try when you have an icky mess to clean up.

8. Forgotten Dishes

Dishes are a constant battle, especially with my big family.  Occasionally some forgotten dishes surface and they can be gross. We divide up dish duties among all the family members, but not all of the kids are always perfect about remembering dishes on the stovetop or bar.  These dishes can get more difficult to clean after sitting overnight.  A good soaking is the cure for both of these issues. Fill the containers with hot water and a little dish soap. Allow the item to soak for a few hours of overnight.
