Enjoy The Finer Things In Life

101 8
Last week I took a short ski vacation to Jackson, NH. The ride is about four hours long so I had ample time alone and as my mind wandered it came to reflect on what may be referred to as the "finer things" in life. Why do we choose to dine at Pot Au Feu instead of McDonalds? What is the allure of reserving a limousine to celebrate a special occasion with friends and family? Where does this urge to experience higher quality, more comfort, and finer services come from?

"We may lay it down that Pleasure is a movement, a movement by which the soul as a whole is consciously brought into its normal state of being; and that Pain is the opposite."

-Aristotle circa 330 BC

More than 2,300 years ago Aristotle was observant enough to notice the all too obvious truth that we as human beings tend to be drawn toward a state of pleasure. We deserve to treat ourselves to that fine dinner, take a limousine out with the people we love, and enjoy the finer things in life.

It is both a pleasure and a necessity to be reminded every once in a while why we work so hard. If we didn’t take the time to experience the best that this life has to offer then what is the point of taking those overtime hours? Who may honestly say that they wish to work straight through some weekends just for the fun of it? As much as frugality is a well respected trait; knowing when to splurge a little bit on ourselves and our loved ones is necessary to maintain perspective in our hectic lives.

Fond memories aren’t made of long hours and sacrifices, they are made at a show or in a limousine with the people you love. Always remember why we do what we do. And call for a limousine next time you plan a special evening.
