How Do Does an Air Ionizer Work in an Air Purifier?

So what is an air ionizer and how does it help you keep the air in your home cleaner? These are all electronic devices which are perfectly safe for you to use in your home and they work by cleverly employing a high electrical voltage in the device, which is used to ionize any molecules in the air that passes through the device.
In other words the air ionizer will take in the air that surrounds it all the time and continuously process it, when it is switched on, to ionize any of the small particles that are in the air that it is processing.
So what, you may ask.
Well the benefit here is that these small particles or molecules in the air are all the things that we need to get rid of to make the air we breathe cleaner and less polluted in our homes.
This is the "fresh air" effect! The ionizing process we are talking about here just means that all the air molecules affected by the process develop into electrically charged ions, which can then be removed by filters thus cleaning up the air in the vicinity of the ionizer device.
Therefore it would be easy to describe an air ioniser as simply an ion generator! But with the help of other components such as the filter it can be built into a very effective air purifier or air cleaner.
Through the use of ionization all the air molecules that can be processed in an air ionizer can actually be given a electric charge, which potentially could be negative or positive.
However in most consumer air purifiers they are designed to specifically create the negatively charged type of air molecules in the device.
So for the more technical among you these are referred to as negative ions or anions.
These negative ions are just very small particles that receive one or more additional electrons from the ionization process and because of this they produce a negative charge on those particles.
This is the output produced by air ionizing types of devices.
However if after processing the air molecules become positive ions then this means that they are short of one or more electrons than they would normally have.
These are called cations and then of course the resulting particles will have an overall positive charge.
These actions aren't produced by most air purifiers on the market! Pretty much all commercial air ionizers that you can see advertised on TV and elsewhere will have been designed to just generate negative ions from any molecules or small particles in the air they purify.
So if you are thinking of buying an air purifier to use in your home then it will contain on of these types of air ionizers to charge the air particles before the filtering process, which will remove all these particles from the air so what you breath is much cleaner.
This is the normal process for air purification and cleaning.
Remember that in the air around us there are at all times very small airborne particles, which you just can not see with your eyes, but which will be charged by the ionizer's electrode ready for filtering.
Fortunately for us all, the air ionizer is a clever and very useful little device.
