How to Set a Table Top
- 1). Position a place mat in front of each chair. Adjust the chairs and place mats so they are spaced evenly. Place a folded cloth napkin to the left side of each place mat. The fold of the napkin should be on the side of the place mat adjacent to the plate.
- 2). Place a fork on top of the napkin. For more formal dinners, where you'll have a salad first, place a salad fork on the left side of the napkin and an entree fork on the right side of the folded napkin. Place the knife on the right side of the place mat, parallel to the fork or forks. If you will be having soup, place a soup spoon next to the knife.
- 3). Place a dessert spoon horizontally at the top of the place mat with the stem of the spoon facing to the right. If you'll be using a dessert fork, place it directly underneath the spoon, with its stem facing to the left.
- 4). Position the plate directly in the middle of the place mat. Adjust the surrounding silverware if necessary. Put a water glass on the place mat, at a 45 degree angle off the tip of the knife. If you have wineglasses, set them to the right of the water glass.
