What You Need To Know Before Looking for a Sugar Glider

Sugar gliders are getting more and more popular as exotic pets in the US.
They are cute and furry, have a great capacity to bond with their owners, and are relatively inexpensive and easy to care for.
But before looking for places that sell them, there are a few things that need to be considered first.
First, you should make sure that they are legal to own in the area or state where you live.
They are considered exotic pets, and some states have restrictions when it comes to keeping exotic animals.
Check with the US Department Of Agriculture to make sure it is legal to own one in your state.
You don't want to get a glider only to have to it if it is discovered you are keeping an exotic pet illegally! You can find gliders to buy from some pet stores, animal shelters, breeders, or private homes.
Make sure that whomever you buy one from, they have proper legal documentation such as permits if such are required.
If buying from a breeder, you should buy only from licensed breeders.
When you find a breeder, go visit them.
Ask to see an official copy of the license from the US Department of Agriculture.
Look over the conditions under which the animals are kept.
Are the cages too small, or too cramped or crowded? Do the animals appear to be in good health? What are they fed? Sugar gliders require more than just pellets in order to get all the nutrition they need.
Ask to hold an adult glider.
Have they bonded well enough with people? You can tell by how comfortable the handler is with holding the animal, and how comfortable and relaxed the glider seems with you.
This is a good indication of how well they are cared for from birth into adulthood.
There should definitely not be any leashes used, either! Next, look for a glider that is no younger than 7 to 9 weeks old.
Reputable breeders should not sell joeys than have not been weaned yet.
Ideally, the baby should not be older than about 12 weeks old, as the optimal bonding age is between 8 to 12 weeks.
Be ready to pick up your new pet in person.
Gliders should not be shipped to you.
When the sale is finalized, be sure to get copies of any relevant licenses to keep with your purchase paperwork.
