How to Increase Your Metabolism in the Morning
- 1). Perform cardiovascular exercise early in the morning on an empty stomach. Cardiovascular exercise increases your heart rate and metabolic rate. The lack of carbohydrates available stimulates your body to use fat for energy instead. Morning workouts are therefore ideal when trying to lose weight.
- 2). Incorporate interval training into your morning exercise routine to jump-start your metabolism even more. Switch from a three-minute jog to a one-minute sprint. Go back and forth between speeds, over the duration of your workout. According to USA Today, intervals double your caloric burn during your workout and they keep your metabolic rate elevated even after you've finished your workout.
- 3). Add strength training to your morning workout. Strength training builds and maintains muscle tissue. Muscles stimulate your resting metabolic rate. The more muscle tissue you have, the more calories your metabolism burns. WebMD states that 1 pound of muscle burns 35 calories per day and one pound of fat only burns 2 calories per day.
- 4). Eat breakfast every morning. When you sleep, your metabolism slows down and needs to be kick-started into action. Consume a healthy breakfast that contains complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein. Whole-grain toast with scrambled eggs and low-fat turkey bacon make a good breakfast. Skipping breakfast triggers your body's survival mechanism where it holds onto fat instead of eliminating it.
- 5). Drink three to five cups of green tea throughout the morning or take green tea supplements. According to The Colon Therapists Network, green tea boosts your metabolism due to the catchechin chemicals in the tea.
- 6). Drink a glass of ice water early in the morning. Because the water is cold, your body has to work harder to heat it up to body temperature. Therefore it boosts your metabolism.
