This building was founded in 1842, as the main government building in Iowa's then capital city. Named a National Historic Landmark in 1976, the Old Capitol building is a monument to the early state government's establishment of the state, and the development of Iowa State University. It was the first official school building on campus. It is open to the public, with a museum on its ground floor dedicated to the school and state's history.

319-335-3500 - The 31st President of the United States was born in Iowa, and his childhood home in West Branch is now a National Historic Site. In addition to the home, Hoover is buried on a hillside that overlooks his birthplace. Also located in West Branch is the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, where history buffs can learn about the life and accomplishments of the former president; it is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. West Branch is in eastern Iowa, just east of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City off Interstate 80.

West Branch, Iowa 52358 - The most famous obelisk in Iowa belongs to the 100-foot tall Sergeant Floyd Monument in Sioux City. Located just off the Missouri River, on the western edge of Iowa, the monument honors the former member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, Charles Floyd. This is actually the very first officially designated National Historic Landmark in America, which took place on June 30, 1960. But the landmark was actually founded in 1901. Sergeant Floyd also rests within this monument, which is in a public park.
