How to Qualify for a European Passport

104 24
    • 1). Request a genealogy search if you suspect that your ancestors have European origins, even though you don't hold citizenship yourself. Download and fill in form G-1041 from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website to request the search. Fill in the form G-1041A from the same website to request for the records of your ancestors and mail your request to the USCIS Genealogy Program in Chicago. Use these records when applying for a passport from the European country you are interested in.

    • 2). Live in the European country legally for the required period of time. This period to acquire citizenship through naturalization varies from country to country. Inquire with the appropriate immigration body in that country or its foreign consulate about the length of time required to qualify for citizenship through naturalization.

    • 3). Marry a European citizen as a step toward citizenship. This does not automatically grant you citizenship, however, as you may have to wait a specified period of time to prove that you were not just marrying to gain citizenship. Consult an immigration lawyer or the immigration body in the country you are applying to for country specific information on citizenship through marriage.

    • 4). Contact the embassy or consulate of the country that you wish to acquire a passport from if you meet the citizenship requirements. Begin the passport application process through the consulate. Remember that all European countries have different requirements when issuing passports but members of the European Union have a passport with a common format or similar physical characteristics.
