    • 1). Change the oil in your Ford Ranger. Empty out the current oil and refill it using a premium brand. Make sure you are also using the correct grade of motor oil. The Ford Ranger uses 5W-20.

    • 2). Replace the Ranger's current air filter with a high-flow air filter. This type of filter will increase the amount of pure air that is filtered into your engine, increasing the horsepower.

    • 3). Increase the compression ratio of your Ranger. Replace the camshaft with an upgrade, which you can purchase from an after-market auto parts shop.

    • 4). Replace the factory exhaust system. Remove the current system, and use an after-market exhaust system in its place. After-market exhaust kits have bigger pipes, which reduce the air resistance in the engine. The reduced air resistance increases the horsepower.

    • 5). Install a cold air intake on the engine. This unit will take in clean, cool air, preventing the engine from recycling hot, dirty air.
