- 1). Move potted gerbera daisies into a barn or shed, if it's available, or the house. This way the plants can go dormant over the winter and be protected from wind and freezing temperatures.
- 2). If you do not have a shed available or can't bring the plants indoors, mulch your gerbera daisies. Spread hay, straw or grass cuttings generously over the plants, using your hands or a shovel. Even out the mulch with a rake. You should end with a 4-inch layer of mulch on top of your plants. Mulch after the first freeze of the year.
- 3). Place a layer of plastic over the mulch to hold the mulch down. Use something simple like a plastic tarp for this step. The thickness of the plastic doesn't matter, as it is being used simply to keep the organic mulch in place.
- 4). Place wooden boards or other heavy objects like bricks or rocks on the corners of the plastic to hold it in place. You should use something heavy enough to hold the plastic down on top of the mulch indefinitely. Make sure to place boards between gerbera daisies rather than on top of them.
- 5). Leave the plants covered or inside until spring. When the plants begin to grow again, remove the mulch or take the pots back outside.
