- 1). Finish 12 hours of pre-licensing education on the California laws and regulations relevant to bail enforcement from an approved school (see Resources).
- 2). Download the California State Bail Agent Application from the CDI website. Type or print your information into the application. Mark the San Francisco location as your choice for your exam location. Fill out a Notice of Appointment form for every company you intend to work with and complete the Forms Filing List, which describes all the forms you intend to use as a bounty hunter. Mail the application, forms and current fees to CDI at the address on the application.
- 3). Go to an approved fingerprint scan vendor and pay to have your fingerprints scanned and submitted to the FBI and Department of Justice for background testing (see Resources).
- 4). Attend the written exam on the date you choose at the San Francisco location. Demonstrate your knowledge of California penal, insurance and regulations through passing the written exam. You will receive your score in the mail. Once CDI receives your background check and test scores, it will mail your bail agent license.
