How to Find Low-Energy Pond Pumps

104 4
    • 1). Be selective. Know what you're looking for when searching for the right pond pump. You need a pump that's energy-efficient but that can pump water through the filter at all hours of the day and night. Low-energy pumps will help save you money, but don't forget that your pump needs to be powerful enough to run 24 hours a day.

    • 2). Determine approximately how many gallons of water are in your outdoor pond or water garden. You can find this information by contacting the company that constructed it. You need a pond pump that can circulate at least as many gallons of water as you have in your pond or water garden, regardless of whether or not the pump is low-energy. For the best results, the entire pond needs to be filtered through about every 1 1/2 hours. To help save energy, don't purchase a pump that pumps more water than you have.

    • 3). Look for external pond pumps. These types of pumps are more energy-efficient than submersible pond pumps and are easier to find in low-energy models. The external pump you choose should not draw more than 10 amps. Pumps with higher amperage waste energy and cost you extra money.

    • 4). Shop around for your low-energy pond pump. Check with home improvement stores, pool supply stores and websites such as Pondepot.com and PondMarket.com. Find the pond pumps that fit with the size and intensity you need, and compare prices at the various places that sell pond pumps.
